Communities in the DC area are brought together by Serve DC’s mission to engage districts through the foundations of partnership building and organizational capacity, which lead local and national service opportunities for those wishing to play a helpful role in community service. Serve DC receives federal grant funds from the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS), along with the US Department of Homeland Security (DHS). The charity organization specializes in the following areas:
- National Service – Serve DC manages the AmeriCorps State national service program that helps initiate ongoing service opportunities to address and solve community needs, especially when communities are in a critical state. Along with the AmeriCorps, Serve DC administers federal Corporation for National and Community Service funds through the DC Commission on National and Community Service. They also help to coordinate several national service acts in the District of Columbia.
- Emergency Preparedness – Serve DC recruits and engages community residents to respond in the event of emergency by providing free training opportunities to make sure people know the correct ways to respond to emergency situations. By ensuring all communities in the DC area are fully prepared if a crisis were to occur, managing the coordination of volunteers and collecting services and donations are all critical aspects of the organization’s emergency response effort.
- Volunteerism – Serve DC would not be where it is today without the selfless, loving volunteers associated with the program. The nonprofit promotes volunteering across the city by engaging residents to be active members of their communities. Serve DC runs a plethora of service days, connects residents with volunteer opportunities, and uses collaboration efforts to bring organizations together as an entire system of volunteer work.
